Since I was a kid, I always tagged along with my dad on weekends to the SCCA races at tracks like Greater Southwest Airport, Green Valley and Texas Motor Speedway in College Station. He was Course Marshall which was a fancy name for the guy who got to drive the Pace Car but also he was responsible for all the Corner Workers. I rode in the Equipment truck at first light delivering Corner Kits which contained all the race flags, pylons, pop-up tents and kitty litter for oil spills. At Midday break, we'd run lunches out to all the corners as well and at the end of the day we'd round them all up and host the corner worker party in the pits or back at the hotel. That left lots of time during the day to watch the races from inside the track. My dad always said "If there was still something to do by the time the green flag dropped, something was wrong." Alas, I never got to drive any of those screaming cars - Thousands of Horsepower with Men Inside! - but instead I got to honor the ultimate fans, the race workers, by designing their promotionals like patches, tshirts and trophies. The Sunburn is just one of the scheduled races held every month or so but Texas summers always brought out the die-hards. My art style is attempting to express the heat inside and outside the cars.
SCCA: Award Art
Since 1997 I have been in charge of promotional designs for the Texas Region of the Sports Car Club of America. These include artwork for t-shirts, patches, dash plaques, trophies and targeted publications. This series encompasses the recent design style.
