The Escapist Bookstore was the brainchild of two young girls in Austin who wanted to create a new location in their neighborhood at which more of their friends could hang.  This wasn't to be an everyday coffee house or quiet nook with big overstuffed chairs and soft jazz.  Most of their friends went to Burning Man, had run off with the circus or were busy doing their own thing in art and music.  In short, freaks.  They knew they wanted to evoke they general mayhem of a circus as personalized by their heroine, Cherry Lane the Cannonball Girl, and contain it all in 800 sq. ft.  They gave me lots of turn-of-the-century circus materials and I saw some of their friends art shows and fire performances.  If there's anything that makes a fire performance better, it's more fire.  The name Escapist came from the book The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon about the early days of comic book heroes.
